چکیده

Skeletal muscle fibers are surrounded by an extracellular matrix. The extracellular matrix is composed of gly cop rote ins, collagen, and pro teogly cans. Proteoglycans have been suggested by different reports to play an important functional role in tissue differentiation. However, an understanding of how protcoglycans modulate skeletal muscle differentiation and the activation of myogenic satellite cells is largely unknown. In the present study, chicken pectoral muscle satellite cells were screened for the synthesis and localization of a heparan sulfate proteoglycan during satellite ceil proliferation and differentiation. A heparan sulfate proteoglycan was detected during the proliferative phase of cell growth. After the induction of fusion, the heparan sulfate protcoglycan had both an intracellular and extracellular distribution. Based on the reported function of heparan sulfate proteoglycans as a modulator of basic fibroblast growth factor activity, it is possible that a satellite cell produced heparan sulfate proteoglycan may interact with basie fibroblast growth factor and be a key component in the satellite cell response to basie fibroblast growth factor.

Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are increased during skeletal muscle regeneration: requirement of syndecan-3 for successful fiber formation.

Skeletal muscle regeneration is a highly complex and regulated process that involves muscle precursor proliferation and differentiation and probably requires the participation of heparin binding growth factors such as FGFs, HGF and TGFbeta. Heparan sulfate proteoglycans, key components of cell-surfaces and ECM, modulate growth factor activities and influence cell growth and differentiation. The...

Syndecans in skeletal muscle development, regeneration and homeostasis.

Skeletal muscle is a highly dynamic tissue that can change in size in response to physiological demands and undergo successful regeneration even upon extensive injury. A population of resident stem cells, termed satellite cells, accounts for skeletal muscle plasticity, maintenance and regeneration. Mammalian satellite cells, generated from muscle precursor cells during development, are maintain...

Syndecan-3 and syndecan-4 specifically mark skeletal muscle satellite cells and are implicated in satellite cell maintenance and muscle regeneration.

Myogenesis in the embryo and the adult mammal consists of a highly organized and regulated sequence of cellular processes to form or repair muscle tissue that include cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Data from cell culture and in vivo experiments implicate both FGFs and HGF as critical regulators of these processes. Both factors require heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans for ...

Sulfs are regulators of growth factor signaling for satellite cell differentiation and muscle regeneration.

Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are required during muscle regeneration for regulating extracellular signaling pathways. HSPGs interact with growth factors and receptors through heparan sulfate (HS) chains. However, the regulatory mechanisms that control HS sulfation to affect the growth factor-dependent proliferation and differentiation of satellite cells are yet unknown. Here we report ...

Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans during Terminal Skeletal Muscle Cell Differentiation: Possible Functions and Regulation of their Expression

Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are key molecules found associated with the cell surface and extracellular matrix (ECM). These macromolecules seem to be essential to achieve terminal skeletal muscle differentiation. In this review, we present data about the types of beparan suifate proteoglycans present in skeletal muscle cells, how their expression changes during differentiation and we propose s...
